Music

Vision Statement

At the Jenny Hammond Primary School, we want our children to love music. We want them to have no limits to what their ambitions are and grow up wanting to be music producers, songwriters, composers or rockstars! Our vision, at Jenny Hammond, is to give children access to an engaging and fun music curriculum reflecting the world they live in now, but at the same time giving them access to musical styles throughout history.

The primary aim of Music at Jenny Hammond is that it should engage and inspire pupils to develop a love of music in all its forms. Children will be exposed to opportunities to listen, appraise, play and perform music throughout their time at JHPS, and it should help them to develop their creativity, imagination and self-confidence. Our intent is to provide children with the opportunity to learn both skills and knowledge within music, so that we might inspire them to become musicians themselves. Our children will be taught music in a way that ensures progression of skills, and follows a sequence to build on previous learning and prepare them as confident musicians for the transition to Secondary.

Some of the many musical opportunities that will be available to your child throughout their time at Jenny Hammond include:

  • Dynamic, interactive weekly class music lessons
  • Learning to play, create and improvise with instruments in our dedicated music studio
  • Weekly in-person singing assemblies, an opportunity to celebrate music of varied genres and cultures
  • Special musical performance assemblies, showcasing some of the music talents of our parents and carers in the Jenny Hammond community
  • Enrichment activities such as Choir and Music Production
  • Opportunities to take part in various extra-curricular musical activities and events, including Young Voices, Christmas Concerts and Parent Assemblies

We want our children to leave us with an appreciation of the wonderful benefits and opportunities that music can create!

Music at home and Oracy

At Jenny Hammond, we want children to be able to share and celebrate music with you at home too! As a school we have a comprehensive focus and emphasis on oracy, and this is very much the case in music lessons. Below are some curated playlists full of tracks selected for each age group, for you to explore and share with your child at home. You will also find some documents with lots of ideas for stimulating rich and engaging conversations around music with your child. You might want to use these to explore and research more about different artists and composers you discover.

Happy listening!
